SASMINIMUM was launched in 2018 by a group of architects driven by the desire to change the way we approach materials in architecture.

It all started back in February 2017, at the Versailles School of Architecture, where 4 students — Barthélémy, Clément, Julien and Marius – dreamed up the concept of building a university campus in the middle of the desert. Our goal was to source exclusively local and renewable resources, and extensive research unmasked the untapped potential of plastic waste as a raw building material. We test-ran the manufacturing of panels (i.e. flooring, wall) from plastic that was recovered from environmental clean-up projects, cleaned and sorted by color/type. The idea had traction.

We started our company right then and there, with the objective of spreading the concept of experimenting with plastic in the architecture world. Our values drove the project: do good, develop an honest product, and fight the global problem of plastic pollution.

 Very quickly, we realized the scale of the problem (8 million tons of plastic waste enter the ocean every year) and that a corporate structure was necessary to take on the challenge. We have proudly staked our tent in the start-up world without compromising our socio-environmental ambitions.

SAS, which stands for Société par Actions Simplifiées, is the French equivalent of an LLC. We fully assume our corporate status without compromising our socio-environmental ambitions. The goal is to create a viable and profitable business in the sustainability sector.

MINIMUM because we do more with less. Simple as that.

Le Pavé was the initial venture launched a group of four architects driven by the desire to change the way we approach materials in architecture. It was initially flooring project developed during a 6-month period at the Versaille school of architecture, during which the name Le Pavé found us.

It all began with a central text for architecture students: a piece by Roland Barthes titled “Mythologie.” In the section about plastic, Barthes unpacks the material in exposing its raw constituency. Riding this wave, we’ve done our best to linguistically capture, in 3D, the form that flooring embodies according to this Barthes … it resembles a SPLASH, a POOF, a CRACK … a slab … a chip! In addition, Le Pavé resonances with the iconic month of May in 1968: a volatile period of civil unrest in France punctuated by strikes and protests. “Le Pavé dans la mare” … a pebble chucked into still water, the ripples that result.

A simple call to action!

sasminimum is our umbrella company, while Le Pavé specifically refers to our project concerning the re-use of plastic.

Moving forward, sasminimum aims to serve as a space to experiment, a laboratory if you will, and develop innovative construction materials from under-utilized supplies. However, creating a monopolistic enterprise in the up-cycling industry is nowhere in our plans. Le Pavé is a project that aims to create a scalable business model that others can replicate, and sasminimum hopes to eventually become an incubator and trailblazer for other companies, helping them set up similar initiatives in areas where plastic waste poses a problem.

sasminimum follows ESS principles (l’économie sociale et solidaire) as inscribed in the French statute. These principles include:

• Executive salaries must not surpass 5 times that of other employees
• Less dividends 
• Greater investment in the company

We work with HDPE. Solid, non-toxic and resistant to the elements, this food-grade plastic is ideal for construction.We are currently experimenting with expanding our repertoire to include other types of plastic.

We source the majority of our material fair trade from an organization in Senegal — Proplast — that recovers plastic waste from beaches and cities.  As a result, our plastic is certified “social plastic.”

The rest comes from a variety of partnerships we have forged with French industrial companies and startups, including Lemon Tri and Gobaplast.

By sourcing from Senegal, we support the waste-diversion industry in Africa. Proplast recovers, sorts and washes recyclable plastics  found in natural environments (i.e. beaches) and cities, creating a sustainable solution to the problem of pollution. We pay a 30% premium on their products to support their mission and invest in their ability to grow. We also collaborate with Waste & Hope, the parent organization that serves as an incubator for companies like Proplast.

Our pre-cut tiles come 45 cm x 50 cm, but we are happy to expand the dimensions based on your needs.

The tiles can be easily installed with screws and wooden dowels, making them easy to uninstall and therefore, reusable.
